PRINCIPAL’S PRIDE

Thank you for your outstanding work and contributions to our school this fortnight. We have much to be proud of at our school and it is wonderful to see the high level of improvement and achievement across classes. Students are engaged, ready to learn and openly and excitedly sharing their learning with visitors. There has been excellent feedback around the positive school climate, supportive learning environments and outstanding manners of our students, and it is a credit to us all!

Our second Try For 5 visit occurred and Matty Bowen who spoke to our Garbutt Magpies Teams about the importance of celebrating the game and encouraging each other to do their best. The high level of sportsmanship and team comradeship that we see within our teams at The Willows is something that we have been focussed on over 2.5 years and I am proud of all students who represent our school in the various sporting and cultural experiences in the wider Townsville Community.

It is excellent to see our school community supporting a wide range of offerings at our school. This year we have had significant engagement through our Peek at Prep, Willows Warriors, Sporting Events, cultural and music initiatives along with keeping up to date through our online Social Media Facebook Page, Website and QSchools. We appreciate your support and look forward to this support being extended through the School Opinion Surveys (codes were sent home with students, please check your students bag).

Over the coming months we will have significant facilities and infrastructure being done at our school. The Undercover Shade Area (between Library and D Pod) is currently being worked on by our Regional Facilities Team and our Security Fencing is anticipated to be started and completed very shortly. Please keep an eye out for further correspondence as these works commence and there will be full details coming to our school community shortly about the construction etc.

As part of our work towards our School Strategic Plan (2018-2021) and Annual Implementation Plans we have progressed and finalised two pieces of work:

1. How do we recognise and celebrate High Attendance at The Willows State School?

Attendance is a big focus for our school. There are many strategies in place to identify the barriers of not attending school and support students/families. We have a number of students not attending regularly and our team is working to reduce these scenarios.

We also however celebrate a significant number of students who are attending 95.1%-100% of the time. The target of 95.1% or above is a school and statewide target and should be celebrated when achieved. Each of these students and their families will be receiving a letter from me to recognise this excellent standard of attendance. These letters will be ready for Week 5 Year Level Parades along with a special voucher especially for our star attendees.

2. How do we celebrate the academic excellence that we see at our school? How do we capture a significant number of students who are performing to outstanding academic achievement across multiple subjects?

Over recent years, I have been privileged to be part of the awards to our Year 6’s at the end of year Awards Ceremony. It always has stuck in my mind however that while this is an important feature for the graduating class, the rest of our school does not attend this. It made me wonder “How do students know what they can work towards? How are we capturing the academic excellence across our school? How can we structure this so it can not only celebrate but motivate all students in the pursuit of excellent academics?”

When we restructured parts of the Year 6 Awards last year, we had in mind replicating the structure of Academic Excellence, Gold, Silver, Bronze from Year Prep – Year 6 at our school. High achievement is to be celebrated and strived for in a schooling context.

The following structure has now been decided to celebrate Academic Excellence at our school each semester to include every learner at our school achieving against the criteria the opportunity to be recognised and celebrated.

Academic Excellence Awards – Each Semester (data generated through reporting periods)

Academic Excellence Award Name

Academic Excellence Award Criteria

Recipient Receives at Academic Excellence Parade

Academic Excellence

Straight A’s across all subjects in reporting period

Medallion and Gold Award

Gold Award

8 A’s across all subjects in reporting period

Gold Award

Silver Award

6/7 A’s across all subjects in reporting period

Silver Award

Bronze Award

4/5 A’s across all subjects in reporting period

Bronze Award

How will we celebrate Academic Excellence with our students, staff and school community?

It has been decided that the celebration of Excellent Academics will be done in a special parade where students will be recognised by students, staff, parents and community.

For Semester One 2019 (now that we have closed the reporting period) we are able to confirm that on the Monday 26 August we will be holding two parades Prep-2 and 3-6 in the morning session. Parents/Carers of recipients can expect a letter home (please check school bags!)

Usually this parade would be earlier in the term, so thankyou in advance for your understanding about this timeframe. Semester 2 parades will be date claimed early in Term 4 to celebrate Semester 2 Academic Excellence with our students.

Effort and improvement in our student learning will continue to be celebrated at Year Level Parades where each teacher selects their students for 1/3 awards weekly (Attendance, Behaviour, Curriculum).

Thank-you for your ongoing support and contribution to our school improvement journey. The Willows State School is a great state school, thank you for being part of it!

Kind regards
Helen McCullough
Principal

GENERAL NEWS

ATSIAP

This week a group of indigenous students from years 4 to 6 competed in the ATSIAP challenge at JCU as part of NAIDOC week.

The students had to present:

  • A poem
  • A piece of artwork
  • A play about long term problem solving
  • A persuasive speech

These presentations are all related to current indigenous affairs and educate these students on aspects of their culture. By coming together as a group the students can form a connectedness with other students at school.

All students and teachers had a fantastic day sharing indigenous culture and we came away with 2 medals a gold and a silver.

We are very proud of the achievements and the work that the students did to make this all possible.

ICAS Assessments for Years 2 - 6

The Willows State School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS Assessments this year for English and Maths. ICAS is developed by UNSW Global, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of New South Wales, with over 35 years’ experience in educational assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every student will receive a certificate and an online result report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.

ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to computer-based assessment. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Students in Years 2-6 are encouraged to participate but it is not compulsory. The cost for each of these tests is $14.50 and they will be held 16 - 20 September, 2019. All permissions are due by Monday 20 August and the school will then issue an invoice for payment. Payment is required prior to the assessments being ordered. If your child has not received a permission note, please contact your child’s class teacher or email Kym Clay admin@thewillows.eq.edu.au.

Has your student lost their glasses?

We have a number of prescription glasses that have been handed in at the office. Please check with the office if your student has lost their glasses.

RACQ

RACQ will be visiting our school in week 5 to educate our students in ‘The Streets Ahead Program. Further information to come in the following weeks.

The Streets Ahead program

The Streets Ahead program includes four age-appropriate presentations covering road safety themes like passenger, pedestrian and bicycle safety.

All of our Education Officers are qualified teachers who will enthuse and educate your students through a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, interactive activities and meaningful discussions.

Our specially designed road mat gives students the ability to learn correct road safety behaviours, and practice crossing the road safely. For older groups, our education officers will demonstrate the importance of responsible behaviours and safety equipment, like helmets and seatbelts, through engaging lessons.

Our Education Officers can also help teachers incorporate road safety education into their classrooms by providing activities for teachers to complement our programs. All Streets Ahead program features content appropriate for students from Prep to Year 6

Positive Behaviour Learning

Creative Messages

We are proud of the creativity our students are showing. They are embracing different ways to get the school messages out into our wider school community. We can see students modelling behaviours, reminding their peers and making posters that are displayed around the school.

These posters are varied in design and many students are working in small teams to create them. Some examples below have been made by students with Mrs Wheeler, who is our Defence Mentor. Other pictures here are from Year 5 students who are spending their own time creating eye-catching posters with clear messages. We thank you for being Responsible members of our school community and cannot wait to see what great ideas you come up with next.

75 Star Reward

Our students have the first round of 75 star reward times for Term 3, coming up at the end of Week 5. Most students are on track to be able to participate in the class reward time and are working hard to receive stars for excellent behaviour and work.

Teachers have planned activities with the students and each year level have selected fun age-appropriate rewards as follows;

Bring a board game

Outdoor activities

Sport and games

Origami

Board games/ free choice

Indoor and outdoor games

Board games

This fortnight our school-wide focus has been ‘Report incidents to staff on duty’, as a reminder to students to see an adult and tell them if they are having a problem. Sometimes students do not see staff straight away, which can delay discussion and resolution of problems. To assist us, please encourage your child, if they need help, to see a staff member as soon as they can. At The Willows we are always Safe.

Well Being

Families that work well together

Success at school is strongly related to families that work well. Below is a list of tips that may assist with strengthening family bonds.

Just as a loving, caring family can help a child develop self-esteem, so an unhappy, fearful family can lead to low self-esteem and a range of problems for a child. Sometimes unhelpful ways of doing things, habits and patterns, form in our families without us realising that this has happened. We often just know that life seems harder and not enjoyable anymore as a parent. You may find it useful to think about how your family works.

Make time for talking and listening.

  • Families where a wide range of feelings are expressed seem to he healthier; feelings such as joy, excitement, anger and fear.
  • Often parents forget that talking with children can be difficult and that they think in different ways from grown-ups. Try to remember how it was for you. The people you liked were probably those who listened to what you had to say.
  • Listening means not only hearing the words but working out what your child is feeling behind the words.
  • Listen without jumping in with answers or lecturing or criticising. Remember what it feels like when you want to talk and have someone just listen.
  • Check that you’re hearing your child correctly by repeating what you have heard but in different words. Show you are interested with brief fill-ins like “Mmm, go on” or “Really!”
  • ‘Put down’ messages, threatening and blaming are likely to make your child feel bad or hopeless.

Show affection, encouragement and appreciation

  • Children and adults feel good when they are encouraged and appreciated. Let your child know what you love and like about them

Show affection, give hugs, be thoughtful and kind

  • Teenagers who remember being praised, kissed or hugged during the previous week are likely to do better at school then those who don’t have this experience
  • Take time to ask what each family member has done each day and show interest in each other’s lives
  • Most people find it easier to criticise than praise, so make an effort to think about the positives and tell your child what you have noticed
  • No one should be left out or made to feel the odd one out in the family
  • Allow each person to be excited about her personal interests and show respect and tolerance

Share the chores and the power

  • Help children to take on responsibilities so that as they get older you allow them to have more say over their own lives
  • The younger the child the more you should be in control, but begin early, giving them chances to do things for themselves with careful watching
  • Use adult power wisely. Keep control through humour and encouragement, not with punishment or threats. In less healthy families there is a never-ending fight for control which is unhelpful to children
  • When children have a real say in what happens and where everyone feels their views are listened to, a very special relationship with trust and intimacy helps build a healthy family

Keep in touch with friends and relatives

  • The more a family is isolated from others the more chance there is of having problems
  • Knowing that there are people outside to turn to when things get tough or in a crisis will make a difference to your child’s happiness and chances of having friends
  • Apart from family and neighbours, share day to day problems with the parents of your child’s friends, (but don’t do it in front of children)

Make family time

  • Plan so there is time to discuss things that affect the whole family
  • Create a sense of belonging – sharing ideas, values and beliefs
  • Find some way to spend time together as a family group. Make fun times together
  • Shared mealtimes (without television or phone calls) allow everyone to share information, and to know what is happening to each other
  • Do things together – play cards or games, take holidays, go on outings or walks, go camping, play sport, share hobbies

Commitment

  • Put the well-being of your family as a first priority
  • Show loyalty to your family. Stick up for each other so that each person feels confident in the family’s support
  • Pull together to form a united front and to find solutions

Family rituals and traditions

  • The little special things (daily rituals) that you do every day and on special occasions held build a sense of belonging, inner security and contentedness. Daily rituals can be how you say goodbye, what you do at mealtimes and bedtime. Families benefit from coming together to celebrate special occasions (e.g. birthdays, Christmas and Name Days) and of having traditions about what happens at these times.

Spiritual values and beliefs

Many families have spiritual beliefs which give a sense of meaning and direction to the ordinary events of the day. They can also add strength and hope in times of crisis and difficulty

Resilience

Strong families are able to withstand setbacks and crises with a positive attitude and shared values and beliefs that help them cope with challenges.

The more members we have actively participating in the P&C association the better we can achieve our objectives.

Please consider coming along to a P&C meeting and getting involved – it’s a great way to meet new people and really contribute to your child’s school experience.

The date for our next meeting is 13th August, 6pm in the Conference Room.

2019 Fun Fair – 16 August 5-9pm

It’s back, bigger and revamped. This year’s Fun Fair has had an overhaul! There will be something for all the family. Come along and have a great night.

Rides and Slides are joining us this year, along with local Pop Up Food Trucks. All the rides will be out on Oval 1 for the kids, with the eating, bar and entertainment area on Oval 2. The TCBC will house the Market Stalls, along with the school stalls.

The kids will have a blast – they can go on the rides, dance at the disco, collect all their stamps on their free Fun Fair Kid’s Travel Passport, pet the baby animals, get their faces painted, buy a balloon animal from the balloon twister, and watch the school’s Rock Bands!

The adults will have a great time too! They can visit the Market Stalls, have a drink at the bar and watch the footy on the big screen, have a cuppa and cake in our Café Quiet Zone away from it all, try their luck at winning a great prize in our Lucky Numbers or great prizes from our 100 boards, or buy a ticket in our major prize raffle on the night to win a Weber BabyQ or a Daikin Air conditioner!

Live Entertainment will be on Oval 2 for all the family to enjoy. Eat your yummy food from the food trucks while being entertained. Our school Rock bands and Concert Band will be joining us, along with other local performers. The Willows Mascots will be visiting, so be sure to say hello to them.

Market Stalls include Thermomix, Stomping Elephants, Scentsy, Creata Designs, Norwex and more!

School Stalls include Chocolate Toss, Tombola, Lucky Numbers, Slime Making Station, Cake Stall, Kids Second Hand Books, and OSHC Cookbooks/Kokodamas,

How can you help?

We are asking for donations of:

  • Chocolates for our Chocolate Toss stall – all sizes, types, even lolly bars!
  • Tombola fillers – stationery items, chocolates (Freddo frogs, other small varieties), USB sticks or small electronic goodies, chalk, novelty games, hair ties, costume jewellery, puzzles, basically anything that will fit in a jar/cup. Any foodstuffs will need to remain in their original packaging.
  • Prizes (both kids and adults) for our Lucky Numbers Stall
  • Bottles of softdrink (coke, ginger ale, and lemonade)
  • Kids second hand books (kids books only please)

These donations can be sent to the OSHC or office. Thank you!

We have made a decision for the Tombola stall this year that we will use plastic cups instead of glass jars. Thank you to those who already have sent in glass jars, we will still make use of them.

You can also help by assisting us for the setup/packup, and on the night by volunteering at a stall – sign up online at the link below:

https://signup.zone/2jD4SpSwN2s8MhYD4

If you can assist with the setup on the day, please sign in at the office, and find us in the TCBC.

Fun Fair Cake Stall

Our Cake Stall at our Fun Fair relies solely on the generosity of our school community. It is always super popular with amazing home baked goodies selling quickly. Please send in your baked delights (labelled with a list of the ingredients, and wrapped securely) to the tuckshop on the day of our event.

Unlimited Armband Pre-purchase for rides

You can save by pre-purchasing an armband for unlimited rides!

http://www.trybooking.com/528916

These armbands are also available on the night, as well as individual ride tickets, but a pre-purchase armband is the best value for money. Pre-purchase bands are available until 9pm, 15 August.

Prep News

In Design and Technologies, PYROW are designing and making a spinning toy.

This term in Maths, PYROW have been learning how to answer simple questions to collect information and to make simple inferences.

In English, PYROW have been learning about rhyming words and being able to write a rhyming verse.

Year 1 News

Year 1 Health – We All Belong

This term in Health, we are learning to recognise the similarities and differences between people, and how our strengths contribute to our identity. We are sharing our strengths with others, and learning what makes our classmates feel proud.

At home, you are encouraged to discuss your child’s strengths with them to assist them with their tasks. We are asking the children to consider what they are good at. It could be swimming the length of a pool, tying their shoelaces, reading a book all by themselves – something that we can do well, and makes them proud.

1MAR had fun playing Guess Who with our class. We created a page which described us and our strengths, and we had to guess who it was. It was a lot of fun learning about our classmates!

Year 2 News

In Year 2 we have been learning to represent multiplication by grouping into sets and arrays. We have been performing a number of engaging and hands-on activities to learn about multiplication such as using concrete aides to group animals and dot painting to demonstrate arrays. We have also consolidated our knowledge by creating our own flip chart, where we wrote number sentences then represented it as both groups and arrays. Our Year 2s are amazing mathematicians!

Year 3 News

At the beginning of this term, Year 3 read ‘The Lorax’ by Dr Seuss in English. Our learning intention was to prepare a spoken retell of a familiar narrative from the perspective of another character in the text.

The writers in 3EVA grew moustaches for our retells. Some of the presentations have been highly engaging to the audience, with use of gestures, tone, pitch and appropriate volume.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Year 4 News

NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Last week, all Year 4 classes and 5THE, finished our NAIDOC week celebrations with some traditional Aboriginal dancing.

The dancing was taught through videos of Miss K’s family, who are an indigenous family from Palm Island.

Following cultural traditions, we broke into two groups – males and females. The boys worked with Mr Menzies, Mr Theodore and Mr Kelly. The girls worked with Miss Kleinschmidt, Mrs Milne, Mrs Nosworthy and Mrs Johnston. Each group learnt their part of the dance and then came together to perform. The dances we learnt were The Willy Wagtail and The Mosquito Dance.

We all had a wonderful afternoon sharing the indigenous culture and learning to tell stories through dance.

Year 5 News

Marvellous Maths!

Over the next few weeks we are learning to continue patterns by adding and subtracting fractions and decimals, and identify and explain strategies for finding unknown quantities in number sentences involving the four operations.

We are also learning to apply a range of computation strategies to solve problems and to plan and calculate simple budgets! These strategies inlcude the number line technique, partitioning and the challenging compensation method.

We are enjoying revising perimeter and area formulas as well as challenging ourselves with our number fact recall!

All of our year 5 students have received a permission form and medical form to complete and return to the classroom teacher. Please note that the return of these forms as soon as possible would be most appreciated. Full payment for the excursion must be made by Monday the 12th of August.

The Willows - School Opinion Surveys

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 29 July to 23 August 2019.

All families, school staff and a random sample of students have been invited to participate.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well and how we can improve. All families should have received their surveys through their eldest child.
