PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community

Welcome to The Willows 2018! We have had a fantastic start to the school year and it is great to see familiar and new faces around our school. I would like to thank each of you for your part and ensuring that child/ren have been well equipped, rested and ready for the school year. Great job!

We welcome to The Willows a significant number of new families. Some of our families have only just started the schooling experience and it was excellent to see them welcomed by not only students and staff but by our parents who have been through the “first days/weeks of school”. This is what makes our school community so great and I thank each of you for being part of it!

We also welcome to our school some returning and new staff. Mrs Souter (Deputy Principal) has returned and has been clocking up thousands of steps in the P-1 area of our school. Mrs Outtrim, Miss Condie, Miss Clarke, Miss McLennan, Mrs Smith, Mrs Pappalardo and Ms Faulks also join the teaching team at The Willows State School and Ms D’Arcy joins our front office team.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our 2018 School Leadership Team.

Mrs Helen McCullough – Principal
Mrs Christine Shann – Business Manager
Mrs Patricia Winter – Deputy Principal (Year 5 / 6)
Mrs Amanda Souter – Deputy Principal (Year Prep/ 1)
Mr Cameron Tod – A/Deputy Principal (Year 3/ 4)
Mrs Kym Clay – A/Head of Curriculum – Teaching and Learning (Year 2)
Mrs Kate Haines – Head of Curriculum – Student Services (PBL focus) (Year 2)
Mrs Claire Franklin – Head of Special Education Services (Students With Disability)
Mrs Narelle Thomas – Guidance Officer
Mrs Paula Prideaux – Master Teacher

Over the course of the 2017 school year, we engaged in a school-wide process to provide us with the direction and feedback required for continuous school improvement. This enabled us to make some changes across a number of areas, update some of our key facilities and areas and as a school team, we are looking forward to 2018 where our Explicit Improvement Agenda items are:

  • Literate and Numerate Students – focus on Reading
  • Australian Curriculum (8 Key Learning Areas) - introducing Digital Technologies
  • Positive Behaviour for Learning (P.B.L.)
  • Community Connections – successful transitions Kindy-Prep and Year 6-7

Our work as a staff has already commenced from 2017 to now in these areas. Our 3 day Pupil Free Day program was designed around each of our Explicit Improvement Agenda Areas. Staff were engaged in a number of key professional learning opportunities and have hit the ground running in their own learning and in our classrooms! Congratulations to all staff for your work leading up to the start of our school year!

Each State School is required to have a Responsible Behaviour Plan for managing Student Behaviour. Our School has done significant work on this over the course of the last 2 years and we have again reviewed this. As a school, we work within a bigger education system. Our school has realigned the Responsible Behaviour Plan to the Positive Behaviour Learning Framework (an evidenced based system that is strongly supported by DET and the North Queensland Region). As a result of this realignment we now introduce the following changes to “The Willows Way”:

As Successful Learners We are:

Safe
Respectful
Responsible

This is The Willows Way!

You will notice across our school that signage has been done and this is a direct result of 25 PBL committee members working together to widely consult and create the rules, expectations and visuals required for us to kickstart PBL in our school from the first day of 2018. The teamwork has been exceptional and our teachers and students are excited about the positive approach to rule reminders and the clear consequences for a small group of our students who need support to follow the school wide systems.

While teachers and students were on holidays we took the opportunity to have some facilities updgraded. H Block has been refurbished and the teachers and students are loving the fresh look! We have installed a Yarning Circle which was painted by local artist, Nicki Bidju. This area will be opened up shortly and provides a great space for us to meet, gather and learn. We also have extended our library to incorporate a “Maker Space” which supports the design technologies (design, make, evaluate) curriculum. This will be finished in the next fortnight and installed with the furnishing required for the hands on learning this subject lends itself to.

Large systems need structure, routine and our school is committed to providing an organised environment. There have been some key changes at our school to meet our school needs:

  • Each week Year Levels will be holding year level parades. These are to set the week up for successful learning, positive behaviour and attendance targets. Teachers are responsible for holding these and parents are welcome to attend (please ask your class teacher when these are)
  • Whole School Parades will be held 3 times per term to showcase the work of our Music, Sporting and School Student Leadership Teams along with whole of school celebrations. These Parades will not include the awards (these are now weekly) for each class (who will now have 3 awards per week rather than 1-2). Parents are welcome to attend and we welcome you to these. Information and dates will be posted on the School Facebook Page and through our date claimers in newsletters
  • Newsletters will now be published in each even week (2, 4 etc).
  • Eating Areas have been established throughout the school by year level to maximise the current shaded areas (including TCBC) and ensure that our teachers are receiving their entitled breaks. Prep students will remain in their class areas until they get a little more comfortable at school.

On behalf of The Willows State School we are looking forward to working with you to provide educational excellence for all students.

Kind regards

Helen McCullough
Principal

BEFORE SCHOOL ROUTINES

At 8am we have limited supervision which is why we have the following in place as part of our duty of care:

All students who arrive from 8am onwards are to go to the Main CPA.

At 8.20am Years 3-6 students are taken to TCBC where they wait until they are released to go to class. Prep-2 students remain in the Main CPA and are released in time to go to class by 8.45am.

No student should be arriving at school prior to 8am. The school is not open and there is no supervision provided.

The Outside School Hours Care facility is an option for parents to book/use and parents/carers who have early starts and late finishing times are encouraged to access this facility.

APPOINTMENTS WITH STAFF

Throughout the course of any day and week, the administrative and teaching staff of The Willows have significant commitments to the Teaching and Learning of our students. If you are needing to see one of the staff, please help us by arranging an appointment time at a mutually beneficial time. This can be done by contacting our office, email or by talking with us.

STUDENT MEDICATION

Refer to the link for the policy for Administration of Medication to students.

RELEASE OF STUDENT INFORMATION AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Our school follows the departmental policy in regards to releasing information which is very clear as to what we can provide. At no time, will information regarding student attendance, performance or other matters be provided via telephone to any member of our school community or beyond.

The information that we are able to provide is information from Student Profiles recorded on the State School System OneSchool. Prior to releasing the profile, staff need to de-identify the record and time must be afforded for this to occur.

Parents who are needing information about their child to take to external appointments need to request this through the front office.

All requests from legal, medical and other external agencies, need to be addressed to The Principal.

Forms and surveys for information for medical providers are to be provided to front office to pass to Deputy Principals. Please do not give these directly to class teachers as this delays the requests significantly.

At no time in our communication with parents do we discuss another child or their circumstances etc. Please avoid embarrassment and in all communication with us, focus only on your child/ren.

POSTIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) NEWS

Dear Parent/Guardians:

The Willows State School has always strived to create a safe and positive learning

environment for all students. In an effort to continue to improve our school climate, staff at The Willows have worked together to develop a Positive Behaviour for Learning Plan (PBL). The primary goal of this plan is to promote consistency in our high standards fostering our school rules of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible. The students will be learning about PBL by engaging in fortnightly lessons that will target different areas of the schools behaviour expectations. These lessons will also be a feature at our whole school and cohort parades. The school has new signage in each area to inform and remind the students of The Willows expectations.

We have adopted The Willows Warriors who are now our Positive Behaviour Mascots. The Mascots were designed, named and voted on by the students of 2017.

Students, classes and cohorts will continually be acknowledged and rewarded for displaying Safe, Responsible and Respectful behaviours throughout the year. Please regularly ask your child if they understand the expectations in different locations around the school and celebrate the rewards your child is receiving.

The teachers and students are currently deciding on the mid-term and end of term celebration for their cohorts. Students will be able to attend the midterm celebration if they collect their 75 stars and the end of term celebration if they have had no major behavioural incidents.

The school’s expectations are printed on signage around the school for teachers, students, parents and visitors. This is so we have a calm and consistent environment conducive to learning.

This term The Willows staff and students are trialling a year level parade system. This is to focus on the celebration of Excellent Learning, Behaviour and Attendance. The students will receive certificates and be cheered by their teachers and peers. We invite parents/carers to come along and join the celebration of student success. Please see parade timetable listed in the Parade News article.

  • No hat No play (Let’s be Sun Safe).

  • Pages to allow students to note assessment results, reading levels and set their own learning goals

P&C NEWS

Welcome to 2018!!!

For some of us, the holidays were much too short. For others, it was well and truly time for school to start again. But regardless, the 2018 school year is here, and it’s going to be a GREAT one at The Willows!

Welcome back, from the P&C. We’re very excited about some new events we have planned for this year, and we’re looking forward to continuing our work with the school in line with the Strategic Plan that was approved last year!

Family Movie Night

The first of our new events is our Family Movie Night. We are planning a night of fun, with a movie on the big screen in TCBC. We’ll have food vans for dinner, snacks, popcorn, ice-cream and drinks available. It should be a great night!

Save the date – Friday 2nd March 2018.

Watch our Facebook page to see which movie we’ll be showing. It will be announced very soon!

Meet and Greet – FREE Sausage Sizzle!

Are you curious as to what the P&C do? Interested, but not brave enough to come to a meeting? We’re holding a Meet and Greet BBQ before our next meeting. P&C members and school staff will be there to answer questions and chat and there is a meeting following this that you are more than welcome to attend if you wish.

The P&C play a very active role in the school. Our work provides much needed learning resources and facilities for the school. Last year we donated $100,000 towards updating technology and computers, and played a big part in the development and approval of the School Strategic Plan. We also organised the book packs, school hats, sports shirts, ran the Tuckshop and Outside School Hours Care, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, the Fun Fair, and we operate the school Facebook Page. (Are you curious to know the faces behind the Facebook page? Now’s your chance to find out!)

Come along for a sausage and a drink and meet your P&C!

Save the date – Tuesday 13th February 2018, FREE sausage sizzle from 5pm!

The Athlete’s Foot

If you are needing to buy shoes, for yourself or your kids, don’t forget our support from The Athlete’s Foot. For every pair of shoes you buy, The Athlete’s Foot will donate $5 to our school! Simply mention that your kids go to our school when you buy shoes from the Castletown or Willows stores.

See you round!

DEFENCE NEWS

Hello and Welcome to 2018.

My name is Correna Wheeler and I am the DSTA at The Willows State School. I have been in the role for 10 years. In that time I have acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding defence families and student challenges at school. I am looking forward to another terrific year and meeting all the defence students, so they can meet me and I can get to know them better. There will be lots happening this term with our Welcome Morning Tea and the Kidsmart program to start in week 4 (a must for students who have posted in). I run a Kids Club first break every Monday and Tuesday at the OSHC building. We have crafts, games and fun there. Every other break the Defence Room is open in L pod for defence students to access. There are organized craft ideas, games, colouring in and just a place to chat/read and meet new friends. A place to come for a chat anytime.

The role of a DSTA in schools is to provide support to students, wellbeing, work to build resilience skills and combat challenges associated within the defence family at school. Approximately 20% of our school students are from Defence Force families. If you have any questions please give me a call anytime.

KIDSMART RELOCATION PROGAM is being held again for all defence students here at school. The program is a four week program for primary aged kids to help them manage postings and relocation. Tyler Turtle is the mascot for the program which helps the kids learn how to manage change, stay connected with friends and meet new people. It covers things like assisting kids cope with feelings when being stressed or anxious. Provides tips on handling emotions and learning great relaxation techniques. Sessions will start Wednesday 14th February and will run every Wednesday for 4 weeks, finishing on Wednesday 7th March. The sessions will start at 3:15pm-4:45pm in L Pod and afternoon tea will be provided. If you have not received a registration form and would like to attend, please complete the attached form and return to the office.

If you are finding life’s challenges overwhelming my door is always open. Don’t forget you are Welcome to come to L pod for a chat/cuppa, any day from 8:00am until 3:00pm. The office can phone ahead to make sure I am in my room or you can email me (cwhee36@eq.edu.au) to arrange a time. Talking with others can help to put things in perspective. See you soon. Students are most welcome in L Pod during breaks. Remember a problem shared is a problem halved.

If you want to know about upcoming DCO programs, events and activities or information about events and services in the wider North Queensland community you need to be on the mailing list. You can e-mail DCO office in Townsville dco.townsville@defence.gov.au and leave details, name, member name, address, email, mobile/home number, children’s names or collect a form from me. I have attached a copy of the form below.

Deployments are a part of the Defence Force family lifestyle. PLEASE LET ME/TEACHER KNOW IF A LOVED ONE IS GOING AWAY. The impact of a parent’s absence due to a deployment can have a huge impact on the whole family, especially children. Sometimes, children lack the language to communicate or understand their feelings and can often express themselves with behaviour that is inappropriate or out of character. At TWSS we aim to support students during parental absence due to a deployment by: engaging the children in a variety of activities that allow them to identify the emotions they may feel during a parental absence; share their experiences with other defence children who may also have a parent away; read books especially written to help children cope with deployments; and create craft items at Kids Club to help the child communicate with the absent parent. Make sure you let your child’s teacher and DSTA know if you or a partner will be away for an extended period of time. Having this knowledge will go towards supporting the student at school.

IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS: EDUCATION ASSISTANCE SCHEME- all defence families can access financial assistance for education costs incurred as a result of postings. Students may be entitled to up to 14 weeks of tutoring in any subject that has been identified by the school as representing a gap in learning. You have 18 months from starting at a new school to access and complete the tutoring. This scheme is very beneficial for students. Please see me if you would like assistance to complete the form. Or you can ring the Helpline for updates 1800 624 608.
